Meet Wangari

Wangari Njathi (Ph.D.) completed her Doctorate of Communication, Rhetoric, and Digital Media from North Carolina State University (NCSU) where her dissertation examined the unfolding of platformization, the intersection between monetization issues arising from the creator economy and the dynamics of digital labor in Africa. Armed with a passion for the rising digital economy in Africa, she conducts research on platform studies, creator economy, data privacy, Internet/platform governance, FinTech, mobile communication, digital economy, and ICT4D from an emerging market perspective.

Wangari Njathi is a Ph.D. candidate pursuing Communication, Rhetoric, and Digital Media. With 8+ years of multidisciplinary work experience in Mobile Phone & IT Industry, Renewable Energy, Non For Profit Organization, Media & Advertising, her research interest lies in digital media and mobile communication. Her notable expertise is in Marketing Communications, Brand Strategy, Digital Marketing, Communications Strategy, Business Development, Budgeting, Account Development in building sustainable brands. She is an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing(CIM) and Google Certified Digital Marketer. Armed with a passion for development studies for Africa, her research interest lies in Emerging Digital Economy, Emerging Technologies, Digital Media, Financial Inclusion and Mobile Communication. She currently teaches Communication 392: International and Cross-Cultural Communication

Wangari is a fellow of the African School of Internet Governance and the Kenya School of Internet Governance (KeSIG). Her work has been presented and appeared at top peer-reviewed journals, publications, and conferences, including Information, Communication & Society, New Media & Society, AoIR Selected Papers of Internet Research, National Communication Association, IT4Change, Microsoft Race & Tech Workshop, Global Perspectives on Platforms and Cultural Production, Development Studies Association conference, Mozilla Festival, International Association for Media and Communication Research, International Communication Association and Rowman & Littlefield. Her research has also been featured in African popular media outlets, such as The Standard, The Cable, Daily Nation, and Business Daily.

She is also a Google Certified Digital Marketer. At NCSU, she has taught Advanced Topics: Digital Media in Public Relations (COM 493), International and Cross-cultural Communication (COM 392), Communication in a Changing World (COM 2000), and Environmental Ethics (IDS 601/602). She is the founder and host of TechOver Africa, a podcast that interrogates the rising digital economy in Africa.
